In my quest to embrace change and figure out what to do next I’ve talked a lot about putting one foot in front of the other and walking out the door. But where do I actually go when I walk out my front door?
One of our favorite places to go in Savannah is just 600 yards from our house. We first visited the Firefly Cafe when we vacationed in Savannah in 2010. We attended church at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah and walked across the square for breakfast after the service. It was wonderful to eat outside on a warm May day and enjoy a delicious bowl of shrimp and grits.
Since moving to Savannah we eat at the Firefly Cafe almost every Sunday after church. I believe this cute little cafe has one of the best Sunday brunches in Savannah. There are several specials featured as well as the regular breakfast menu. The chef always prepares a featured quiche and this is usually what I get with a cup of fresh fruit. We love the breakfast burrito and secretly wish that the chef would put this on the regular menu. My husband is a huge fan of the Habersham Hashbrowns. You need a hearty appetite to be able to polish this dish off. The Savannah Eggs Benedict has an exquisitely different twist with flaked crabmeat on top.
If it has been a busy day and we don’t feel like going far we will walk over for dinner. All of the salads are great but I love the Teriyaki Chicken Salad. This salad seems to taste incredibly good on a hot summer day. Two of my favorite items off the regular menu are the Coconut Curry Shrimp and the Risotto Della. The Firefly Cafe has a good assortment of wines to accompany your meal. If bread pudding is one of the dessert choices I would encourage you to try that!
The owners and staff at the firefly are very friendly and the customer service is great. The wait staff know what we like to drink and usually bring it to the table before we even ask. That’s how well they know us and a testament to how often we go there! If you’re a fan of the Pete the Cat books you will find several Pete the Cat paintings hanging in the cafe. James Dean and his wife live in Savannah. I’m guessing that they like the Firefly Cafe too!
When you visit Savannah be sure to stop by the Firefly Cafe on the corner of Harris and Habersham Streets. It’s the only restaurant on Troup Square. For a preview of the menu check out the website.
